Banks to Operate Only 5 Days a Week from April? Here’s What the Government Says

Banks: Will banks be open only 5 days

Recent discussions have emerged regarding the implementation of a five-day workweek for banks in India starting April 2025. While the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and bank unions agreed in 2023 to adopt a five-day workweek, with plans detailed in the 9th Joint Note in March 2024, this change requires approval from the central government and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

As of March 25, 2025, there has been no official confirmation from the government regarding the implementation of a five-day workweek for banks beginning in April. Social media claims suggesting that banks will operate only five days a week from April lack substantiation.

Bank employee unions have been advocating for this change to enhance work-life balance and align with international standards. However, until the government provides formal approval, banks will continue their current operational schedule.

It’s advisable for customers to stay updated through official bank communications or trusted news sources for any changes to banking hours or operations.
