Rain in Delhi – Torrential Downpour, Gusty Winds Blame NCR; IMD Issues Red Alert

New Delhi, May 2, 2025 — The national capital and nearby NCR areas experienced heavy rainfall and strong gusty winds Thursday night, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for the next 24 hours.

Deluge Grips the Capital
The residents of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad faced waterlogged roads, traffic jam and outages on power lines in several parts of the city, an IMD report said. The intensity of the rain fell from 70 to 100 mm in different parts of the city with winds reaching 50 to 70 km/h.

Heavy rain began as late Wednesday night and continued early Thursday morning, flooding major intersections, including ITO, Minto Bridge and parts of Outer Ring Road, with commuters suffering crippling delays because of flooding and stuck vehicles.

Red Alert Issued for Delhi-NCR
Delhi-NCR is on a red alert following continued heavy to very heavy rainfall and sustained winds that can cause severe damage, the IMD said. The warning, which will continue up to Friday evening, asked residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay indoors.

“A strong western disturbance, coupled with moisture-laden easterly winds have triggered this weather pattern, with further rainfall and squally weather expected over the next 24 hours, ” said an IMD official.

Flight and Rail Services Affected
While several domestic flights departed from IGI Airport were delayed or diverted due to poor visibility and gale-force winds, Northern Railways said delays were minor along major routes due to waterlogged tracks and operating halts.

Schools Shut, Emergency Services on Standby
All schools in Delhi have been closed today, urging people to stay safe and not leave their homes during the “heavy rain” hours, the government said. Municipal Corporations have deployed emergency response teams to clear drains, remove fallen trees and restore power supplies.

Tips for Residents During Red Alert
Avoid travel unless absolutely necessary.

Stay away from electric poles, trees, and flooded areas.

Keep emergency numbers handy.

Charge essential electronic devices in advance.

Follow updates from IMD and local authorities.

Conclusion

As intense monsoon pressure rages across Delhi-NCR, residents are being asked to be safe, consult weather advisory well in advance and take precautions as the country goes on a red alert.
